What Is Depo-Provera And What Are The Risks?

Depo-Provera is an injectable contraceptive containing medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic progestogen hormone. A landmark peer-reviewed study published in the British Medical Journal in March 2024 found:

Women who used progestogen-based injectable contraceptives like Depo-Provera had a 5.6 times higher risk of developing intracranial meningioma compared to non-users
Long-term users—generally those who used the drug for one year or more—faced the greatest risk
Critically, researchers found that many tumors shrank after patients stopped using Depo-Provera, indicating a direct hormonal link between the drug and tumor growth

Additionally, a 2025 study analyzed data from more than 10 million women and found that long-term Depo-Provera users had a 2.45-fold increased risk of meningioma.

In 2024, the European Medicines Agency added meningioma as a possible side effect of high-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate products, and Canada updated its Depo-Provera label with a meningioma warning while U.S. labels remained unchanged

What Is A Meningioma, And What Harm Does It Cause?
